Sinovac Biotech Ltd. (NASDAQ: SVA) said Monday that the Chinese vaccine maker filed an application with China's State Food and Drug Administration to begin human testing of a vaccine for a virus that causes hand, foot, and mouth disease.

The company said its vaccine treats human enterovirus 71, which causes the disease. Sinovac said the disease is highly contagious and is a major problem in Asia, but no vaccines or antiviral drugs are available.
In morning trading, Sinovac shares rose 37 cents, or 5.9 percent, to $6.62. The stock has ranged from $1.02 to $12.50 over the past year.
