Vince Carter scored 29 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and dished out 10 assists while Jason Kidd finished with 11 points, 8 boards and 6 assists as the New Jersey Nets (40-41) beat the New York Knicks (32-49) 104-95 to pull within one game of .500 on the season.
Carter got some help from Mikki Moore in the first quarter as the forward/center scored 12 points. Of the Nets 27 points in the opening period, 25 came from Carter and Moore with Richard Jefferson adding the only other bucket.
The Nets opened the second quarter on a 13-2 run after hitting four three-pointers and a free-throw to take a 40-27 lead. New Jersey was able to maintain their lead throughout the second quarter in large part because of free-throws. Of the Nets final ten points in the second quarter, eight came from the line.
Things weren’t much different in the third quarter as New Jersey tallied 14 points from the line while scoring 24 in the quarter. Carter finished with 13 in the period while hitting a three-pointer, a jumper and going 8-8 from the line. By the end of the quarter the Nets were up by ten and the Knicks showed little life.
New York was able to cut the lead to four after Mardy Collins scored seven points in a 10-4 run to start the fourth quarter but a pair of free-throws from Richard Jefferson and a follow up three-pointer pushed the Nets lead back to nine and the Knicks had no more answers.
