Former Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid, known by many as Gus Dur, has died after suffering heart failure. He was 69.
Wahid, a Muslim cleric, became Indonesia’s first elected president following the fall of the Suharto regime in 1998. He was elected in October 1999 and served until he was forced out of office by the country’s national assembly in 2001 for failing to handle the country’s economic issues.
