U.S. stocks made small gains by the close of a low volume trading day in the market Wednesday. Optimistic reports on manufacturing pushed the market higher in mid morning only to be negated somewhat by a drop in crude oil inventories resultant of the strengthening dollar. This boosted oil prices and energy shares.
At close The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 3.1 points to close at 10,548.51, boosted by a 1.7% gain in shares of Alcoa Inc. The S&P 500 index gained a miniscule 0.23 points to hit 1,126.42. The Nasdaq Composite climbed 2.88 points, or 0.1%, to close at 2,291.28.
