Suicide Bomber Kills 8 CIA Workers in Afghanistan

A suicide bomber strapped with explosives entered a military base in Afghanistan and blew himself up, killing eight Americans working for the CIA.

The Taliban, which has already claimed responsibility for the attack, has said the bomber had been working for the Afghan army. Those claims have raised further questions about Afghanistan’s ability to properly screen recruits before taking them on as soldiers.

Thursday’s attack, the worst attack against U.S. intelligence workers since 1983 when eight CIA officials were killed in the attack on the U.S. embassy in Beirut, occurred at the Forward Operating Base Chapman in Khost Province, located near the Pakistani border. The area is one of the Taliban’s remaining strongholds and an area that has been targeted by NATO forces.
