If last night’s performance on ‘American Idol’ doesn’t send the 17-year-old Sanjaya Malakar home then there may be nothing that will.
Ushering in country music week spelled disaster for Malakar who butchered the Bonnie Raitt hit “Something to Talk About.” After his performance it was apparent that all the judges were at the end of the line with the Sanjaya madness and clearly made it known that it was time for people to do the right thing and send him home. Randy called the attempt “very bland and boring” while Paula could only muster a comment about Malakar loving adversity. Of course Simon held nothing back declaring the fun with Sanjaya has come to an end and the performance was “hideous.”
Sanjaya’s survival had always relied on another contestant or two who fell short of average. Tuesday night Sanjaya was all alone in the awful category and with that deserves to find himself holding both spots in the bottom two.
Phil Stacey seemed to finally find his niche as he was praised for his rendition of Keith Urban’s “Where the Blacktop Ends.” All three judges felt that Stacey could have a career in country music based on his performance.
Jordin Sparks really stepped it up and became a true threat for the title ‘American Idol’ with her performance of “Broken Wing.” Simon told Sparks that it was the first time that he felt that she could actually win the competition.
Lakisha Jones sang ‘Jesus Take the Wheel,” a song made famous by ‘American Idol’ winner Carrie Underwood. While not blowing anyone away with the performance, Lakisha has proven she belongs amongst the ‘Idol’ finalists based on previous weeks.
If there is an out for Sanjaya it will be Chris Richardson who sang “Mayberry” to the dismay of the judges. Richardson has gained some popularity with the audience so that may help but if Sanjaya’s troops are out in force Richardson may not have enough voters casting ballots.
Melinda Doolittle once again proved she was in a different league than the rest of the ‘Idol’ contestants when she sang “Trouble is a Woman.” All three judges raved about the performance with Simon calling it “fantastic.”
Blake Lewis was the final contestant to take the stage and he took on Tim McGraw’s hit “When the Stars Go Blue.” Lewis had to step out of his comfort zone with the song but did a solid job and should have no problems when the vote is revealed tonight.
Saying Sanjaya belongs in the bottom two is an understatement but nobody would be surprised if he was sitting on the couch as Chris Richardson and Phil Stacey sweat it out as the unlucky duo.
