Ruth Lilly, a noted philanthropist and heiress to the Eli
Lilly and Company Pharmaceutical, has died. Lilly died Wednesday night in
Indianapolis, a family spokesperson announced Thursday. The cause of death was not released. Lilly was
94.
Lilly, who battled depression most of her life, gave away
the majority of her estimated $800 million fortune to charitable and arts organizations.
She was married for over 40 years. The marriage ended in divorce and no
children.
Lilly’s depression was helped greatly by Eli Lilly and Company’s
revolutionary anti-depressant Prozac, which hit the market in 1988. Her
physician, Jack Hall, said the drug “changed her life.”
She is survived by 6 nieces and nephews, 14 great nieces
and nephews and 10 great-great nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
