Starting Monday, February 10th, Dog Tag Art will launch 22 brand new Nyan Cat tags, available only through DogTagArt.com. Dog Tag Art tags aren't just for dogs. The Asheville-based company makes custom pet ID tags for all pets, including cats, and will be the first to offer a special line of official Nyan Cat pet ID tags starring the Internet sensation “Nyan Cat.”
The new Dog Tag Art tags will include the original Nyan Cat--a grey kitty with a pink Pop-Tart body and a rainbow trail--and all the other Nyan Cat characters, like Cool Jazz Nyan Cat, Zombie Nyan Cat, Dub Step Nyan Cat, Pirate Nyan Cat, Fiesta Dog, and a host of themed Nyan Cat tags for every holiday.
To celebrate the Nyan Cat tag launch, Dog Tag Art will feature daily Nyan Cat tag giveaways on their Facebook page from February 10th to the 14th, and are scheduled to host a #NyanCatTag Twitter party with a special grand prize package on Thursday, February 13th, from 7 to 8 pm, EST.
The Origins of Nyan Cat
Nyan Cat is the brainchild of artist Chris Torres, also knows as “prguitarman.” In 2011, Torres, who was 25 years old at the time, posted a GIF animation of Nyan Cat flying through space on YouTube, where it quickly went viral. In one month the Nyan Cat video topped 7.2 million views, and by the end of the year Nyan Cat was the fifth most-watched video on YouTube.
The original cartoon cat was loosely modeled after Torres' Russian Blue cat, Marty, and gets its name from “nya” the Japanese word for “meow.” The soundtrack for the video is by a well-known Japanese artist, Daniewell-P, with the lyrics “Nyanyanyanya,” looping continuously in the background.
106 Million Views, and Counting
Today, Nyan Cat has amassed 106 million views on YouTube, and has three million fans on Facebook. Worldwide, Nyan Cat has proved so popular that it has been developed into several different apps and games for the iPhone, iPad, and Android systems. Its even inspired “nyancoin,” the world's first “officially licensed cryptocurrency in history.” One can find Nyan Cat t-shirts, plushies, and accessories, but never before has there been a line of Nyan Cat pet tags, until now.
The First Nyan Cat Tags by Dog Tag Art
Teaming up with Dog Tag Art, Nyan Cat will reach a new audience of animal lovers, who will undoubtedly be smitten with the pixelated kitten.
“Since the start, I've always felt that Nyan Cat needed to branch out into really cool pet accessories, starting with pet tags,” said Torres, the creator of Nyan Cat.
“With two cats of my own, I know how important tags are for added security, and am glad to pair up with Dog Tag Art for an awesome line of Nyan Cat tags,” he added.
The Rise of Internet Cat Stardom
It's no secret that there's been a spike in Internet cat celebrity over the past couple of years, but Nyan Cat continues to top the lists of online cat sensations. In real life, the Nyan Cat creator shares an agent with two of the other most famous “celebrity cats”: the ever-frowning Grumpy Cat, and Keyboard Cat, who played before the Puppy Bowl at this year's televised Super Bowl event.
All in the Family
As for Dog Tag Art, they're excited to grow their cat-loving customer base and help bring awareness to the importance of tag-wearing safety for cats, too.
“Some people think that Dog Tag Art tags are just for dogs, but they're for any indoor/outdoor pets you want to keep safely identified,” said Jack Carrier, president and founder of Dog Tag Art. “An ID tag is your cat's ticket home in case they get lost or run away.”
“We expect the new Nyan Cat tag line to appeal to cat people and dog people,” he added. “With the Nyan Cat designs, there's a little something for everyone, including 'Fiesta Dog,' a chihuahua with a taco body.”
