Jermaine Thomas rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries, E.J. Manuel threw for 189 yards and added 69 yards and a TD on the ground and the Florida State Seminoles defense collected five sacks to send head coach Bobby Bowden out a winner, knocking off the West Virginia Mountaineers 33-21 in the Gator Bowl on Friday.
It was West Virginia who started hot, grabbing a 14-3 advantage in the first quarter as Jarrett Brown scored on a 32-yard touchdown run and following an FSU field goal Noel Devine added a one-yard run to put the Mountaineers in control.
The Seminoles climbed back into the game in the second quarter as Jermaine Thomas scored FSU’s first
Touchdown on a 12-yard run and then Dustin Hopkins kicked a field goal just before the half to make it 14-13 at the break.
Florida State then put ten on the board in the third quarter, taking the lead on Hopkins third field goal of the game and then Thomas gave them a 23-14 cushion after scoring on a 19-yard run. West Virginia finally stopped the bleeding in the fourth quarter as Ryan Clarke pulled the Mountaineers to within 23-21 on a 5-yard TD run but the Seminoles answered when E.J. Manuel scored on a 2-yard keeper and Hopkins iced the game with just over two minutes left on his fourth field goal.
