Afghan Parliament Deals Blow to Cabinet Nominees put forth by President Hamid Karzai

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has been dealt a serious blow by the country’s parliament after 17 of his 24 nominees for Cabinet positions were rejected.

Karzai presented the names of Cabinet nominees two weeks ago but on Saturday a secret ballot of more than 200 MPs discounted the majority of the president’s selections, among them Justice Minister Mohammad Sarwar Danish, Women's Affairs Minister Husn Bano Ghazanfar and Energy and Water Minister Ismail Khan.

Karzai has been attempting to appease Western officials who have stressed the importance of tackling corruption to stabilize the country. The president has also been trying to repay favors to those who have supported him but parliament did not look favorably on those selections, calling into question their competency for Cabinet positions.

After a controversial presidential election last August in which nearly a quarter of the ballots were considered fraudulent Karzai was elected to a second five-year term.
