Ben Roethlisberger was 18/27 passing for 220 yards and three touchdowns, Rashard Mendenhall and Willie Parker combined for 185 yards on the ground and Mike Wallace had 64 yards receiving and a touchdown as the Pittsburgh Steelers (9-7) held off the Miami Dolphins (7-9) 30-24 on Sunday to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Pittsburgh had their offense rolling in the opening frame as Roethlisberger hooked up with Santonio Holmes on a 5-yard touchdown pass for a 7-0 lead and after the Dolphins evened the score on a Chad Henne 11-yard touchdown pass to Lex Hilliard the Steelers went back in front when Roethlisberger hit Webster on a 54-yard TD strike.
Things settled down in the second quarter as the Dolphins cut their deficit to 14-10 on a Dan Carpenter field goal but the Steelers countered with a Jeff Reed field goal to put the score at 17-10 at the half.
The Steelers then built some breathing room as Roethlisberger found Health Miller on a 3-yard touchdown pass for the only score in the third quarter. Reed then stretched the Steelers lead to 27-10 early in the fourth with a 21-yard field goal and it looked like Pittsburgh would cruise. Miami had different ideas though and Brian Hartline pulled the Dolphins to within 27-17 on a 16-yard touchdown run and then Tyler Thigpen found Davone Bess on a 34-yard touchdown pass to get within 27-24.
Pittsburgh eventually put the game away with a Reed field goal with 40 seconds left and it was iced when Thigpen tossed his second interception of the day.
