France Follows US and UK, Shuts Down Embassy in Yemen Following Terrorist Threats

Following the lead of the United States and the United Kingdom, France has shut down its embassy in Sanaa, Yemen after receiving threats of a terrorist attack.

The threats came from an al-Qaeda offshoot known as al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the same group which claimed responsibility for attempting to blow up the Northwest Airlines jet bound for Detroit, Michigan on Christmas day.

On Sunday the United States and the United Kingdom opted to close their embassy in Yemen, citing continuous threats as their reason. The embassies will remain closed while security is reviewed.

In 2008 an attack on the US embassy in Yemen left 19 people dead. That attack was blamed on al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. The terrorist organization has called on Muslims to kill “every crusader who works at their embassies or other places.”
