The world’s tallest tower opened today in Dubai, but like most elements surrounding its construction, the name of the vertical spire remained in question. Today the skyscraper was renamed, the Burj Khalifa, an unexpected honor for the President of the United Arab Emirates.
Sheik Khalifa was present for the opening, which was complete with fireworks and multimedia displays. The motive behind the renaming was likely the billions of dollars Sheik Khalifa, who is the ruler of Abu Dhabi in addition to being the UAE federation president pumped into the project to insure its completion.
The final month of construction has been marked by doubt, the result of Dubai’s inability to begin paying off the loans it owes for the project.
Dubai is opening the tower in the midst of a deep financial crisis. Its oil rich neighbor and UAE capital Abu Dhabi has pumped billions of dollars in bailout funds into the emirate as it struggles to pay its debts.
