Steven Tyler’s addiction to pain medication brings attention to a growing issue as he attempts to get his pain from years of performance injuries under control.
The rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle has long been known for leading to an abuse of drugs and alcohol as musicians overindulge night after night. But there’s a new form of addiction that is becoming more prevalent among aging rockers: An addiction to pain medication.
People Magazine reported this week that Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler “has entered a rehab facility for pain management and an addiction to prescription painkillers resulting from 10 years of performance injuries.”
"With the help of my family and team of medical professionals, I am taking responsibility for the management of my pain and am eager to be back on the stage and in the recording studio with my bandmates Joe Perry, Joey Kramer, Tom Hamilton and Brad Whitford," Tyler said in a statement released to People.
Drug Addiction
Tyler, 61, is known for is lively stage show, and the decades of performing have taken their toll with multiple orthopedic injuries over the years. No stranger to addiction, Tyler reportedly successfully completed treatment in the mid-‘80s for drug and alcohol abuse, remaining clean for decades. Those in recovery for another substance are at higher risk of addiction to pain medication and need to be even more vigilant.
Tyler’s daughter, actress Liv Tyler has gone on the record in support of her dad’s decision to enter rehab, saying, "My family and I are in complete support of my dad's decision to seek treatment. He is a courageous man. We love him and are so proud that he is getting help to balance his pain management, not just for himself but for his family, friends and fans."
