The rising stardom of Shia LaBeouf took on an added boost last week when he landed atop the box-office after “Disturbia” knocked off “Blades of Glory” over the weekend. For LaBeouf to do it again he will have to hold off a trio of flicks that have received less than stellar reviews.
Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling star in “Fracture,” a film that centers around a district attorney (Gosling) who must deal with a case involving a husband (Hopkins) who murders his wife. While there’s more to it than that it really just kicks up the same clichés that have been thrown on the big screen when it comes to this type of genre. Nothing suspenseful or intriguing about seeing a film you saw ten years ago.
“In the Land of Women” is another movie centering around a familiar topic. Just dumped by his girlfriend, Brody travels to Detroit to take care of his grandmother. While there he manages to form some kind of a bond with a family next door comprised of a mother, teenage daughter and younger girl. Of course he changes their lives and in the process changes his own.
Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale partner for “Vacancy” and while this film is another recycled plot at least Wilson is playing a different character. Forced to stay at a seedy motel after running into car trouble they soon realize that they could become central figures in a snuff film if they aren’t able to escape.
Not exactly a powerhouse weekend expected at the ticket counter with the crop of flicks hitting the big screen. There’s a good chance none of these three will actually crack the top three as “Disturbia” proved itself strong last week and “Blades of Glory” and “Meet the Robinson” stayed on course. There’s also a good chance “Perfect Stranger” climbs up from its fourth spot last week.
