Kellen Moore was 23/39 passing for 211 yards, Doug Martin rushed for 42 yards and a touchdown, Brandyn Thompson had a pair of interceptions including one returned for a TD and the Boise State Broncos (14-0) defense limited the TCU Horned Frogs (12-1) to just 36 yards rushing in a 17-10 Fiesta Bowl win on Monday.
Thompson provided the first score of the game when he picked off TCU quarterback Andy Dalton in the opening quarter and went 51 yards for a touchdown. Boise State then extended their lead to 10-0 in the second when Kyle Brotzman kicked a 40-yard field goal but the Horned Frogs managed to grab some momentum heading into the half after Dalton hit Curtis Clay on a 30-yard TD toss to climb within 10-7.
TCU then evened the score at 10-10 late in the third when Ross Evans split the uprights on a 29-yard field goal and that’s the way the game would stay going into the final frame. Boise State turned to their bag of tricks midway through the quarter as they used a fake punt on a fourth-and-nine, eventually leading to a 2-yard touchdown run from Martin to go in front 17-10.
The Horned Frogs looked like they had a perfect opportunity to tie the game after they got a strong punt return from Jeremy Kerley. On the first down it looked like Dalton had Antoine Hicks for a sure touchdown but the ball went through his hands and the Horned Frogs eventually turned the ball over on downs.
TCU still had one more shot at tying the game but they were forced to start at their own one-yard line after a Kyle Brotzman punt. Dalton managed to move the Horned Frogs down to the Broncos 30-yard line but a third interception ended the game and gave Boise State just the second 14-0 record in FBS history.
