Earthquakes in Solomon Islands Leave more than 1,000 Homeless

Residents of the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific continue to deal with the affects of Monday’s 7.2 earthquake that triggered landslides and a tsunami.

While no deaths have been reported, more than 1,000 people are said to have been left homeless as landslides swallowed houses and several aftershocks have left some standing structures unsecure.

The landslides were mainly concentrated on the remote Rendova island, nearly 200 miles from the capital of Honiara. Officials have said the quakes, which triggered a tsunami producing waves as high as eight feet, could have been much more destructive but people headed for higher ground as soon as the earth started shaking.
