U.S. President Barack Obama to Announce Tighter Airline Security Measures

U.S. President Barack Obama is expected to unveil new airline security measures which will include improved watch-lists, tougher screening practices and new procedures aimed at preventing possible attackers from boarding planes.

Obama ordered reviews of the current security measures in place after a 23-year-old Nigerian man was arrested on Christmas day after attempting to blow-up a Northwest Airlines plane bound for Detroit. An investigation into how Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab managed to board the aircraft with explosives led to a number of changes in how passengers are screened and the U.S. has now identified 14 countries that will be subjected to enhanced security measures before travel.

Tuesday’s announcement from Obama is expected after he meets with a number of security and intelligence officers including Defense secretary Robert Gates, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, CIA Director Leon Panetta and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.
