The Washington Redskins are said to be in the final stages of contract talks with former Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan and a deal could be in place as early as Tuesday.
Shanahan is the top candidate for the vacant Redskins position which opened early Monday morning following the firing of Jim Zorn. Washington owner Dan Snyder and general manager Bruce Allen met with Shanahan on Monday and by Tuesday the coach had his agent flown in to negotiate a deal.
Washington finished the 2009 season with a 4-12 record and failed to beat a team with a winning record, prompting the organization to fire Zorn following the final game of the year, a 23-20 loss to the San Diego Chargers.
Shanahan spent 14 seasons as coach of the Broncos and collected two Super Bowl titles.
