The Associated Press has named New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady as the 2009 NFL Comeback Player of the Year after returning from a knee injury that sidelined him for all but one quarter last year.
Brady was coming off an NFL MVP season in 2007 when he went down with a knee injury in the Patriots first game of 2008. He bounced back in 2009, throwing for 4,398 yards and 28 touchdowns while leading the Patriots to a 10-6 record and the AFC East title.
While Brady received 19 of the 50 votes Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Carnell “Cadillac” Williams racked up 14 votes to finish second. Williams was also coming off a knee injury but put together a strong campaign in which he rushed for 821 yards and four touchdowns while catching 29 passes and an additional three TDs, often producing the only offense on a Tampa team that finished 3-13 and totaled just 244 points.
Also picking up votes for 2009 NFL Comeback Player of the Year were Tennessee Titans QB Vince Young (7), Cincinnati Bengals RB Cedric Benson (4), Minnesota Vikings QB Brett Favre (4) and New Orleans Saints DE Anthony Hargrove (1).
