Baron Davis scored 33 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and handed out 8 assists while Stephen Jackson added 23 points to lead the Golden State Warriors to a surprising 97-85 victory over the Dallas Mavericks in their first game of the Western Conference playoff series.
In what was supposed to be a match-up of two of the NBA’s most prolific offenses the first half offered 38 points from each of the teams. Coming in to the contest the Warriors had averaged 106.5 points per game, second only to the Phoenix Suns, while the Mavericks averaged right at 100 points.
The second half proved to be a little more exciting as Baron Davis scored 19 in the quarter to put the Warriors in front by six after three quarters.
Dallas was able to close the gap to two in the fourth but the Warriors wouldn’t collapse as Davis hit a jumper to push the lead to four and after DeSagana Diop hit one of two from the line for the Mavericks Jason Richardson scored on a layup for Golden State and Stephen Jackson followed with a three-pointer and the lead was up to eight with three minutes left.
The Mavericks shot just 35 percent from the floor as Dirk Nowitzki was 4-16 and Josh Howard was 8-21 in the loss.
Both teams will meet again on Wednesday for game two of their best of seven series.
