A U.S. Grand jury has indicted a Nigerian man on six counts related to an alleged plot to blow-up a Northwest Airlines plane bound for Detroit on Christmas Day.
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab has been held in custody since December 25, the day he allegedly attempted to ignite an explosive while aboard flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit. Several passengers were able to overpower the 23-year old until the plane landed safely.
On Wednesday the grand jury indicted Abdulmutallab on counts of attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, attempted murder within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the U.S., willful attempt to destroy and wreck an aircraft, willfully placing a destructive device in or near an aircraft which was likely to endanger the safety of the aircraft, and two counts of possession of a firearm, ie bomb, in furtherance of violent crimes.
According to court documents Abdulmutallab concealed the explosives PETN and TATP in his clothing prior to boarding the aircraft. There were 279 passengers and 11 crew members on board the aircraft.
