Marijuana Celebrity Use

While drug addiction is seen as a problem, marijuana use is tolerated with a knowing wink by celebs.

Heroin, club drugs and prescription pain med addictions are all recognized as problems, especially when they go from dabbling to addiction, but for many, smoking pot is not put in the same class. It’s something to do to mellow out at the end of a hard day or to help make a party more enjoyable or to enhance a concert experience.

Marijuana can’t really hurt you, can it? Pop culture would make you think it’s a rite of passage. It’s the one drug many teens try even if they never experiment beyond that. And making it seem even cooler are celebs like Snoop Dogg, who has gone on the record about his longtime pot use.

The latest to jump on the pro-pot bandwagon is soulful singer John Mayer. On his latest album, Battle Studies, he uses the song “Who Says” to pose the following question:

“Who says I can't get stoned / Turn off the lights and the telephone / Me in my house alone / Who says I can't get stoned?”

He’s not the first to suggest his personal pot use doesn’t hurt anyone, but as the song has gained radio airplay as the album’s lead single, you have to wonder how the message is affecting listeners – especially young ones. He’s just one more in a sea of celebrity voices that say this drug is cool even as they watch those around them fall from getting caught up in the use of heavier things.
