NBA News: Gilbert Arenas Suspended Indefinitely by NBA Commissioner David Stern

Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas has been suspended without pay indefinitely by NBA commissioner David Stern who said the three-time All-Star was “not currently fit to take the court.”

The suspension will begin immediately and was a result of Arenas bringing guns into the locker room, a violation of NBA rules. While Stern initially said he would wait for the completion of a criminal investigation he opted to take action now.

Arenas is alleged to have carried the guns into the Wizards locker room on Dec. 21 and placed them on a chair near the locker of teammate Javaris Crittenton. The two players had been involved in an argument stemming from a card game on Dec. 19 which then carried over to the 21st. Arenas allegedly told Crittenton to choose one of the guns at which time Crittenton informed Arenas he had his own gun.

The incident quickly escalated into a criminal investigation due to D.C. gun laws which prohibit the storing of weapons in the District, loaded or unloaded. On Monday Arenas met with law enforcement officials to explain why he had the weapons, telling them he moved the guns from his Virginia house to the Verizon Center to keep them out of reach of his children.

Arenas admitted to bringing the guns to the locker room and placing them on the chair but insisted the act was part of a joke and never threatened Crittenton. The guard released a statement in which he said, “Joke or not, I now recognize that what I did was a mistake and was wrong. I should not have brought the guns to D.C. in the first place, and I now realize that there's no such thing as joking around when it comes to guns -- even if unloaded.’

Arenas will lose $147,208for every game missed by the suspension.
