An antitrust review of the proposed takeover of NBC Universal by Comcast Corp. is planned by the U.S. Justice Department, according to department spokeswoman, Gina Talamona.
The Justice Department rather than the Federal Trade Commission will handle the investigation and will determine whether the deal holds potential for market monopolization. If the Justice Department resolves that the arrangement is acceptable, Comcast will control their original cable, online and cable channels, a major movie studio and TV networks.
Comcast is already the largest U.S. cable operator but wanted to expand it’s assets to diversify it’s options with the continued prevalence of new media and online viewing. If the deal is approved, Comcast will own 51 percent of the $28.2 billion venture, once owned exclusively by General Electric.
