AndroGel Lawsuits Filed After Studies Link “Low T” Product to Heart Attack, Stroke Risk

Five lawsuits have been filed over the prescription testosterone therapy AndroGel, alleging that the product can cause heart attacks, strokes and ischemic strokes, ClassAction.org reports.

ClassAction.org is alerting consumers to reports that the maker of AndroGel is facing at least five lawsuits alleging that men suffered from serious cardiovascular events after using the prescription testosterone gel. The plaintiffs allege that Abbott Laboratories Inc. failed to adequately warn the public that its testosterone gel could put patients at risk for life-threatening cardiac events and are seeking compensation for past and future medical bills and pain and suffering. In light of these allegations, the attorneys working with ClassAction.org would like to hear from men who suffered from serious cardiac events after using prescription testosterone therapies such as AndroGel, Fortesta, Testim, Bio-T-Gel or Striant. Five men have filed lawsuits in Illinois federal court accusing Abbott Laboratories of failing to provide the public with adequate warnings for its prescription testosterone therapy, AndroGel. According to the lawsuits, plaintiffs allege AndroGel can cause “life-threatening problems, including strokes and heart attacks.” One plaintiff claims he suffered from a stroke after using the “low T” prescription, while another claims he experienced an ischemic stroke, or a mini-stroke. Three other plaintiffs allege that they suffered heart attacks after using AndroGel. The lawsuits also allege that Abbott took part in a “massive advertising campaign” to convince millions of men that they suffered from low levels of testosterone. While lawsuits claim Abbott marketed AndroGel for symptoms including listlessness, increased body fat and moodiness, the plaintiffs allege that these are simply symptoms of aging.

The lawsuits came just days after the FDA announced that it would be investigating the risk of heart attack, stroke and death in patients using prescription testosterone products. According to the FDA, two recent studies sparked its investigation. First, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that men using prescription testosterone were at a 30 percent increased risk of heart attack, stroke and death. Second, the medical journal PLOS ONE published a study where researchers found middle-aged men with a history of heart disease and men ages 65 and older were twice as likely to suffer a heart attack after receiving prescription testosterone. The FDA said that it would be reviewing the results of these studies and other available data to determine the safety of these prescriptions and would communicate its final conclusions once its evaluation was complete.
