The national health care reform legislation is “very close” to being finalized according to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Wednesday following a meeting with President Obama. Pelosi and other house democratic leaders convened with the President at the White House after several hectic days for legislators, the President and other members of the staff.
The State of the Union address is fast approaching, scheduled for early February, and is being dually viewed as the deadline for the final draft of the health care legislation. Still there’s much to be done in terms of sorting out the various inconsistencies that remain between the House and Senate bills.
The bills passed by the House and Senate both demand that most all Americans receive health care coverage and that the government provide subsidies for those who are unable to afford it. There are many more areas; however, that they do not agree on, that remain unresolved. Examples of such discrepancies include the number of people to cover, the individuals who should be taxed and the inclusion of illegal immigrants in the arrangement if they purchase coverage with their independent money. Abortion, and how to prevent the cost from being placed on the collective also remains an issue for the parties. Also up in the air, is the price for the bill with the House proposing a more costly route than the Senate.
The President is becoming increasingly involved as the bill enters the fast track and many members of the House and Senate predict a completed bill as early as the end of the month.
