Saturday’s auction of music memorabilia at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York brought in an estimated $2.4 million for charitable organizations designed to assists victims of Hurricane Katrina and Rita.
Highlighted pieces of memorabilia auctioned off over the weekend included a guitar used by Jimi Hendrix to record “Electric Ladyland” that went for $480,000, a Fender guitar played by Bob Dylan that sold for $192,000 and another guitar used by Paul McCartney that raised $81,600.
Among the charitable organizations that will benefit from the auction is Music Rising, a charity that serves to replace musical instruments that were lost during the hurricanes. U2’s The Edge is a co-founder of the charity and he offered up his own 1975 Gibson Les Paul guitar that fetched $288,000. His band mates were well represented as a pair of Bono’s sunglasses raised $24,000; Adam Clayton donated a bass that went for $22,000; and a tom-tom drum owned by Larry Mullin Jr. raised $19,000.
