After leading the Toronto Raptors to an Atlantic Division title and a 20-game improvement from a year ago, Sam Mitchell was named the NBA’s coach of the year on Tuesday.
Mitchell was at the helm last season when the Raptors finished a disappointing 27-55 but managed to turn it around and tie a franchise record for wins this season as they posted a 47-35 record to earn a number three seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Collecting 49 fist-place votes, Mitchell rang up 394 points, 93 more than Utah Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan. Avery Johnson of the Dallas Mavericks finished third with 268 points.
