Mark Ingram collected 116 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 22 carries, Trent Richardson rushed for 109 yards and a pair of TDs on 19 carries and the Alabama Crimson Tide (14-0) defense forced five turnovers in a 37-21 victory over the Texas Longhorns (13-1) on Thursday night in the BCS National Championship Game.
Things couldn’t have started better for the Longhorns as their defense held the Crimson Tide on their first three offensive plays and then a fake punt was intercepted giving Texas great field position. Everything changed five plays later when quarterback Colt McCoy was knocked out of the game after injuring his shoulder on a hit from Marcell Dareus. Texas managed to get a Hunter Lawrence field goal out of their opening possession and following a turnover on the ensuing kickoff the Longhorns added another Lawrence field goal to go up 6-0, a lead that would carry into the second quarter.
Alabama managed to put their dismal opening frame behind them and grabbed the lead in the opening minute of the second as Ingram scored on a 2-yard TD run. That advantage was extended to 14-6 when Richardson busted through the line and went 49-yards for a touchdown and the Tide clearly had the momentum. Alabama continued to put points on the board as Leigh Tiffin kicked a 26-yard field goal with 29 seconds left in the half and it looked like they would head into the locker room with a 17-6 lead. In a stunning turn of events Texas opted to try and move the ball with freshman quarterback Garrett Gilbert and that would cost them as he had a shovel pass picked off by Dareus who rumbled 28-yards for a TD with three seconds on the clock for a seemingly insurmountable 24-6 lead.
That 18-point advantage held for most of the third quarter but the Longhorns gained some momentum late in the frame as Gilbert found Jordan Shipley on a 44-yard touchdown pass to get Texas within 24-13 heading into the fourth. Texas then stunned the Tide with another scoring drive and when Gilbert hit Shipley on a 28-yard TD toss and then converted the two-point attempt the Longhorns were within 24-21 with 6:15 on the clock.
Texas would eventually get the ball back and have a chance to at last tie the game but the Tide defense came up huge, collecting their first sack of the game and knocking the ball from Gilbert deep in Texas territory. Moments later Ingram stepped into the endzone from a yard out and the Tide had a 31-21 cushion. Another Longhorns turnover would lead to a Richardson TD with 47 seconds left on the clock, sealing the eighth national championship in school history, tied with Notre Dame for most in college football.
