Avalanche in Russian Caucasus Kills Five Climbers

Five climbers have been killed by an avalanche in the Russian Caucasus in southern Russia, their bodies discovered close to the summit of the 12,140-foot peak of Gedan-tau.

 

According to reports the climbers, four novices and a guide, were near the peak when the avalanche struck. Four climbers managed to escape but the others were swallowed by the fast-moving snow.

 

All four novice climbers were said to be in their 20s while the guide was reported to be 40. The climbers had recently completed a week-long climbing course.
