Ray Rice rushed for 159 yards and two touchdowns, Willis McGahee added 62 yards rushing and a TD and the Baltimore Ravens defense intercepted Tom Brady three times and recovered a fumble in a 33-14 thumping of the New England Patriots in the opening round of the AFC playoffs on Sunday.
Things couldn’t have started better for Baltimore as they jumped to a 7-0 lead on the game’s first play from scrimmage when Rice went 83 yards for a touchdown. It quickly jumped to 14-0 after the Ravens defense forced Brady to fumble and five plays later Le’Ron McClain crossed the goal line from a yard out. After the teams traded punts Brady was picked off, setting up yet another touchdown for the Ravens as Rice scored from a yard out and Baltimore was up 21-0 midway through the opening quarter. Baltimore would tack on a field goal and carry a 24-0 advantage into the second.
New England finally caught a break early in the second quarter when the Ravens muffed a punt and the Pats recovered. Brady managed to get the Patriots on the board when he found Julian Edelman on a 6-yard touchdown toss and that 24-7 score would hold until halftime.
Midway through the third quarter the Ravens added a field goal following another Brady interception to go up 27-7 but the Patriots cut their deficit to 27-14 when Brady and Edelman hooked up on a one-yard TD toss.
Baltimore responded to the New England touchdown will a game-clinching six minute drive that was capped by a 3-yard run from McGahee that gave the Ravens a 33-14 advantage after the two-point attempt failed. New England had a chance to make it a two-score game but a 44-yard field goal attempt from Stephen Gostkowski failed and the Ravens chewed up the next five minutes of the clock to ice the game.
