President Barack Obama has said he has “no intention” of deploying U.S. troops to Yemen or Somalia in an effort to curb militant activity in those countries.
Obama said working with international partners is a more effective approach to handling militant groups in those countries. The president also pointed out that the majority of al-Qaeda activity was taking place along the Afghan-Pakistani border and the U.S. efforts would continue in that area.
While Obama did not rule out the possibility of sending troops to other countries in the future he did not see that coming any time soon.
Attention turned to Yemen following the failed Christmas Day plane bombing in Detroit. The militant group al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, based in Yemen, claimed responsibility for the operation.
