Israeli Government Approves Move to Construct Barrier Along Border with Egypt

The Israeli government has approved a plan to construct a barrier along two parts of its border with Egypt in an attempt to halt illegal immigrants and militants from entering the country.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave the go-ahead for barriers that would block the main routes used by migrants and militants. Those areas would include parts of the border near the Red Sea city of Eilat and along the edge of the Gaza Strip. The PM also approved plans to enhance the surveillance equipment used near the border.

Netanyahu stressed that the decision was based on securing Israel, saying in a statement “I took the decision to close Israel's southern border to infiltrators and terrorists. This is a strategic decision to secure Israel's Jewish and democratic character.”
