As most reality shows often try to do, ‘American Idol’ tried to reinvent suspense on Wednesday night as they revealed the bottom two and sent shockwaves through the ‘Idol’ faithful.
First Melinda Doolittle was declared safe, believable enough, she’s been solid throughout the competition and Tuesday’s performance was no exception as she has proven herself to be the strongest vocalist in the competition.
Blake Lewis gets the nod that he is safe and things start to get a bit tense. While Lewis has been the best performer amongst the guys to this point, his rendition of “Imagine” didn’t exactly bring tears to the eyes.
Now there’s serious trouble brewing as Phil Stacey hears that he will be staying and the bottom three consists of at least two contenders. Stacey has survived thus far based on average competition and would have been sent packing in seasons past.
When LaKisha Jones is told she will make it to next week there is a eerie sense that something has run afoul in the ‘Idol’ world. The one time favorite has fallen on tough times of late and Jones’ performance on Tuesday left many believing she would be eliminated.
That leaves two and surely it would be Chris Richardson. No way America’s favorite little 17-year-old (no not Sanjaya, Jordin Spark) would be sent home to concentrate e on school work.
And then it happened. Ryan Seacrest tells Chris he is safe, Jordin nearly falls apart. Little miss Sparks begins to cry, realizing that her dream is over, but wait, remember this is ‘American Idol’ and this is reality television, and this is suspense. The chicanery never ends with ‘Idol’ as Seacrest then tells Jordin she, in fact, is safe as well. Nobody goes home on charity night.
Oh the humanity. That ‘Idol,’ their a crazy bunch.
