Barnes & Noble Inc. has plans to begin a rental program for college textbooks lightening the nearly $700 annual average students spend on books.
The pilot program began at three bookstores but is spreading quickly. 25 of Barnes and Noble’s 636 campus bookstores are now equipped with the book rental programs.
Each of the programs, which are in place at University of Maryland and University of South Carolina, among others uses the same rate of 42.5 percent of their selling price.
Programs of this kind have been around for quite some time but are only gaining popularity now since Congress set aside $10 million to provide grants for a rental program.
