Functionality testing has commenced on Google’s new click-to-call technology. The new feature allows smart-phone users to call companies featured in an ad simply by clicking the links for them in their browser. Google spread the word to their AdWords customers this week in an email explaining the new facet of the ads and the news that it will apply to their accounts in the near future.
The technology operates by a location-specific business phone number will be featured next to the destination url in the mobile ad. The person browsing has the option of clicking to call where once they would only have access to the website. Advertisers will be charged for the call in the same way they would be for visiting a website.
The advertiser can opt out of the new program, but with the rate of a call consistent to that of a click, many are likely to approve of the new option.
Google began patenting this technology in 2005 but is only launching it now that the company’s new phone the Nexus One is on the market.
