McDonald's Corp., the largest global fast food chain, announced Monday that its current head of it’s U.S. operations, Don Thompson, will be promoted to the position of president and chief operating officer. The 46-year-old Thompson will begin his new task of overseeing the 32,000 locations in McDonald’s global empire immediately.
The 46-year-old Thompson replaces Ralph Alvarez who’s tenure with the company came to end at last month for health reasons.
Thompson started at the fast food chain in a Chicago-area location in 1990 and has been rising up the ranks of the company since. As head of U.S. operations, which he was named in 2006, Thompson has been quite successful with increasing sales and introducing new products like McCafe, a well-received line of coffee beverages.
Thompson will be replaced by 54-year-old, Jan Fields. Fields currently serves as executive vice president and chief operations officer for McDonalds.
Shares of the chain, which has been faring well in the recession as a result of their lower-cost options, rose 48 cents to $62.32 Monday.
