Light therapy stops tooth loss in dental patients with periodontal disease: NewsTarget.com

A light-activated germ killer slowed the progression of periodontal disease in rats over the short-term, according to a study conducted by researchers at Sao Paulo State University and published in the Journal of Periodontology. Researchers hope that this can eventually be adapted into a treatment for humans.

 

Periodontal disease is an infection of the gum tissue around the teeth, leading to inflammation of the gums, bone loss and loosening of teeth. Researchers found significantly less bone loss in the rats receiving photodynamic therapy than in those receiving no treatment, but no significant difference between photodynamic therapy and the other treatments.
