Attorneys Investigating Lipitor Lawsuits On Behalf of Women Diagnosed With Diabetes

The attorneys working with ClassAction.org are investigating potential claims on behalf of women who used the cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor and developed type 2 diabetes. There are currently 270 Lipitor diabetes claims pending in federal court, according to the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation’s most recent report. According to these lawsuits, Pfizer Inc. knew that its statin could put patients at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, yet failed to provide the public with adequate warnings regarding this risk. In light of these allegations, ClassAction.org is offering complimentary case reviews for all women who used Lipitor and developed type 2 diabetes.

In February 2014, a federal multidistrict litigation (MDL) was formed for the Lipitor diabetes lawsuits, which are being overseen by the Honorable Judge Richard M. Gergel in the U.S. District Court, District of South Carolina. Hundreds of cases pending in the federal MDL allege that women using Lipitor are the most at risk for developing diabetes and that Pfizer failed to perform sufficient studies regarding the safety and efficacy of the use of its statin in women.

Prior to 2012, the lawsuits allege that Lipitor never carried a warning for the risk of developing high blood sugar levels or type 2 diabetes. While the FDA announced in 2012 that it would be updating the labels of all statins to include the risk of high blood sugar, the plaintiffs allege that these labels still do not provide the public with adequate warnings about the risk of type 2 diabetes. The FDA’s announcement was reportedly spurred by several recent studies, one of which found that patients using statins were 9 percent more likely to develop diabetes when compared to patients who used different medications to treat their cholesterol levels. Another study the FDA cited found that postmenopausal women using Lipitor were at an increased risk of new-onset diabetes, and more recently, researchers found that Lipitor, above all other statins, put patients at the highest risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

There is no known cure for type 2 diabetes, and the disease can put patients at risk for further medical problems including heart disease, blindness, neuropathy and kidney disease. The plaintiffs are seeking compensation for medical expenses, economic losses, physical and emotional injuries and pain and suffering.

The attorneys working with ClassAction.org are reviewing claims on behalf of women who developed type 2 diabetes after using Lipitor. While the Lipitor diabetes cases have been consolidated to federal court in South Carolina, there is still time for women to join this growing litigation.
