Four foreign contractors working in the volatile Delta region in Nigeria have been kidnapped while their guard was shot and killed by unidentified militants.
Three British nationals and a Colombian, all said to be contractors with a Dutch company working for the Nigerian subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell PLC, were nabbed near the city of Port Harcourt early Tuesday morning.
According to reports the four had been on their way to a power plant when they were ambushed by gunmen. The guard assigned to the contractors was killed in the ambush and the four contractors have been taken to an undisclosed location.
The oil-rich Delta region of Nigeria has a long history of violence as militants have attempted to gain a larger percentage of its wealth but things have calmed down since several groups laid down their arms following an amnesty offer from the government last year.
A search has been launched to locate the foreigners and the British Foreign Office has called the kidnapping a “matter of great urgency.”
