Saudi Arabia Arrests 172 Suspects in Plot to Attack Oil Facilities and Military Bases

Saudi officials arrested 172 suspects who had been planning various attacks on the country’s oil facilities as well as surrounding military bases.

According to a statement released by the Interior Ministry addressing the suspects, “Some had begun training on the use of weapons, and some were sent to other countries to study aviation in preparation to use them to carry out terrorist operations inside the kingdom.”

After the arrests were made police uncovered several caches of weapons which included rocket-propelled grenades and automatic rifles. Police seized computers and an amount of cash estimated at $5.33 million.

The ministry’s statement said the suspects had been influenced by al Qaeda and that their intentions were clear, “One of their main targets was to carry out suicide attacks against public figures and oil installations and to target military bases inside and outside (the country).
