While “Disturbia” has sat atop the box-office for the past two weeks there are a crop of new films coming out Friday that will be looking to unseat the reigning bread winner. The likelihood of Shai LaBeouf leading “Disturbia” to yet another victory look slim with the firepower set to hit theaters.
Nicholas Cage and Jessica Biel star in “Next” about a man who can see two minutes into the future. Cage is cast in his typical role as the guy who saves the world from imminent destruction after being cajoled by the government to lend a helping hand. Despite the regurgitated script the movie has the heavy hitters, most notably Biel, who can bring in the bucks with her looks. Julianne Moore is the FBI agent that tracks down Cage to enlist him in the world saving business.
You can’t underestimate “Condemned” as a serious threat to “Disturbia” either. Steve Austin, known in the wrestling world as Stone Cold Steve Austin, is sure to draw some of his sports faithful fans. Austin is awaiting death in a Central American prison when he is bought by a television producer and sent to a remote island with nine other killers. The ten are forced to fight to the death with the lone survivor earning freedom. Sound familiar? It should, Arnold Schwarzenegger did this movie 20 years ago when it was called “The Running Man” but hey those wrestling fans just sold out Ford Field in Detroit for Wrestlemania so don’t be surprised if they fill theaters for their boy.
If movie-goers are looking for a laugh they may opt for Jamie Kennedy’s new flick “Kickin it Old Skool” where he plays a guy that hits his head while breakdancing in a talent show and slips into a coma. After awakening 20 years later Kennedy remains determined to keep his breakdancing team intact and rise to fame. The role Kennedy plays isn’t much different than the one he played in “Malibu’s Most Wanted” so its good for a few laughs and could challenge “Blades of Glory” for the comedy dollar.
