Denver Nuggets’ Center Marcus Camby Named NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year

After putting together a regular season that in which he averaged 11.6 rebounds, 3.3 blocks and 1.2 steals, Denver Nuggets’ man in the middle Marcus Camby was named NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year.

Camby joins Dikembe Mutombo as the only two players in Denver’s franchise history to win the award. Marcus also snapped Ben Wallace’s two year streak of taking the honor.

The 6’11 center actually averaged higher stats last year but was relegated to just 56 games due to injuries. While his rebounds, blocks and steals are impressive it’s his ability to control the paint and force opposing teams to alter shots and stick to a perimeter game that clearly defines Camby’s value.

Denver and the San Antonio Spurs are currently knotted at a game apiece in their Western Conference playoff series. Camby had 10 rebounds, two blocks and two steals in their game one victory and 18 boards, three blocks and two steals in the game two loss.
