President Bush remained steadfast in his promise to veto any war spending bill passed by Congress that included a timetable for the U.S. withdrawal of troops from Iraq.
While the spending bill has gained strong support from the Democrats in Congress it has failed to attract enough crossover votes to override a presidential veto. The bill passed by Congress on Thursday had approved $124.2 billion with more than $90 billion earmarked for the U.S. involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Along with the funding was a requirement that American troops begin a drawback starting no later than October 1. The bill is expected to hit Bush’s desk early next week with the president already vowing to reject it.
Bush addressed the next step saying “I invited the leaders of the House and the Senate to come down soon after my veto so we can discuss a way forward, I'm optimistic we can get a bill, a good bill and a bill that satisfies all our objectives.”
