Haiti Earthquake Causes Severe Damage, Deaths

The powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake that shook Haiti Tuesday shortly before 5 p.m. destroyed much of the capital Port-au-Prince. Although there is still no estimates of the dead, reports say a significant loss of life is expected.

The quake struck about 6 miles underground and was centered about 10 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince. It was felt in eastern Cuba and the Dominican Republic. No major damages or deaths have been reported in those areas. At least 28 aftershocks of 4.0 magnitude hit Haiti.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the government is offering “our full assistance” to Haiti.
