Leader of al-Qaeda Cell in Yemen Killed in Gun Battle

The leader an al-Qaeda cell position in Yemen has allegedly been killed after a gun battle between militants and security forces.

Yemini forces have identified the leader as Abduallah Mehdar, the man who headed up an al-Qaeda group in the Shabwa province. According to reports those Yemeni forces surrounded a house where more than 20 militants were staying and the two sides exchanged gunfire.

Many of the militants managed to escape but the governor of Shabwa, Ali Hassan al-Ahmadi, confirmed that Mehdar was killed.

While Yemeni officials have been calling Mehdar a leader of al-Qaeda his significance has been downplayed by militants who have called him a low-ranking member.
