With Nigerian President Umaru Yar’Adua still in a Saudi Arabia hospital receiving treatment for a heart condition a court has ruled that Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan has the right to perform all duties on behalf of the president.
Yar’Adua has been in Saudi Arabia since late November, leading many inside Nigeria to question who should be heading the country. Many of those questions have been raised due to the ruling party’s practice of alternating power between north and south. Yar’Adua hails from the north and many northern supporters don’t want Jonathan, a southerner, to have power prior to the 2011 presidential election.
While many northerners have expressed fears about Jonathan inheriting power Yar’Adua has said he has been in constant contact with his VP and he hopes to return to Nigeria shortly to resume his duties.
