With the first pick of the 2007 NFL draft the Oakland Raiders selected LSU’s quarterback JaMarcus Russell.
Russell threw for 3,129 yards and 28 touchdowns in his final season at LSU and was a unanimous first team All-SEC selection. At 6’5, 254 pounds, Russell will be looked upon to improve a Raiders offense that was the leagues worst last season.
Oakland passed for a total of 2,420 yards last season with Andrew Walter and Aaron Brooks taking most of the snaps under center. The Raiders had a team total of 7 touchdowns through the air while throwing 24 interceptions. There wasn’t another NFL team with fewer than 13 touchdown passes and only the Cleveland Browns threw more interceptions, 25.
The Raiders also gave up a league high 72 sacks, something they are hoping a bigger, stronger Russell can manage.
