Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin won’t be playing his first NBA game until next year after it was announced he would be undergoing surgery on his broken kneecap, effectively ending is rookie season before it ever started.
The Clippers used the first pick of the 2009 NBA draft to select Griffin and the team was looking to him as an immediate impact. Griffin impressed in a number of preseason games but in his final game before the regular season he shattered his kneecap following a dunk.
Griffin, who was named the college basketball player of the year after averaging 22.7 points and 14.4 rebounds for the Oklahoma Sooners, rested his knee for several weeks but his recovery was not progressing the way team doctors had hoped.
